At the Banting Research Foundation, we are privileged to have a team of dedicated and passionate leaders guiding us towards achieving our mission. Today, we are honored to feature our Board Chair, Dr. Catharine Whiteside, a distinguished physician, medical researcher, and academic leader.
Dr. Catharine Whiteside is not only the Chair of our Board but also the Director, Strategic Partnerships at Diabetes Action Canada, where she oversees strategic initiatives aimed at improving patient care and outcomes related to diabetes. She has dedicated her career to advancing health education, particularly in the areas of internal medicine, nephrology, and patient-centered practice.
A University of Toronto graduate, Dr. Whiteside has held numerous leadership roles throughout her career. She served as the Director of the Clinician Scientist Training Program at the University of Toronto in 1997 and as the Dean of Medicine at the same institution from 2006 to 2014. It was during this tenure that she was recognized with WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award in 2012. She also held the position of Executive Director of Diabetes Action Canada from 2016 to 2021.
Her contributions to the medical field extend to her research as well. Dr. Whiteside’s research has significantly contributed to our understanding of kidney disorders and how diabetes and glucose levels affect kidney cell interactions during injury and healing.
Dr. Whiteside’s commitment and excellence have earned her numerous accolades, including the 2007 Kidney Foundation of Canada Medal for Research Excellence, the 2009 Canadian Medical Association May Cohen Award for Women Mentors, and being appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016.
We are deeply grateful for Dr. Whiteside’s leadership and contributions not only to the Banting Research Foundation but also to the broader medical and scientific community. Her passion, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence inspire us every day as we work towards our mission of supporting innovative medical research.
