At the Banting Research Foundation, we have a rich tradition of supporting early-career health and biomedical researchers who demonstrate innovation, impact, and commitment to improving human health and well-being. This year, we are delighted to spotlight Dr. Brice Batomen Kuimi, an outstanding scholar in the field of epidemiology and recipient of the University of Toronto 100th Anniversary Discovery of Insulin Banting Award.
Dr. Batomen Kuimi is an Assistant Professor of epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. His academic journey is marked by excellence, demonstrated by a strong publication record with 30 publications, 13 of which he is the first author. His academic background includes a PhD in Epidemiology from McGill University, an MSc in Epidemiology from Universite Laval, and a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from Universite de Dschang. In addition to his impressive academic record, Dr. Batomen Kuimi has also been honored with the 2022 Young Scientist Award of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS) and the 2022 “Coup de cœur” award by the Réseau de recherche en sécurité routière du Québec (RRSRQ).
His current project, funded by the University of Toronto 100th Anniversary Discovery of Insulin Banting Award, focuses on understanding the effectiveness of different traffic calming measures on traffic collisions and injuries in Toronto over a 15-year time period. Using rigorous time series methods, the project aims to incorporate spatial-temporal trends and explore seasonality. This innovative research addresses an unmet need in the field, documenting and assessing the impacts of Vision-Zero initiatives and active transportation programs, particularly in urban areas.
The potential impact of Dr. Batomen Kuimi’s work is high, particularly given the changes in transportation patterns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His proposed research has the potential to contribute significantly to our understanding of the effectiveness of traffic calming measures, which could lead to improvements in public health and safety.
We are confident that Dr. Batomen Kuimi’s commitment to improving human health and well-being, combined with his impactful research, will make a lasting contribution to his field. Each Banting Discovery Awardee is selected through a rigorous peer-review process and chosen for their exceptional potential to make significant contributions to their field, and Dr. Batomen Kuimi is no exception.
Congratulations, Dr. Brice Batomen Kuimi, on your achievements and your selection as a 2023 Banting Discovery Awardee! We look forward to following your work as it continues to shape our understanding of public health and safety.
